From the day we are born to our dead bed the only term that is constant is “career”. It is like an imprint that is used as a symbol of identification in our society. Career development is more than just deciding on a major and what job you want to get when you graduate. It really is a lifelong process, meaning that throughout your life you will change, situations will change and you will continually have to make career and life decisions. In each such situation a person should act vigilantly and make decisions wisely. To overcome this dilemma and turmoil and to make you think vigilantly there is the introduction of the savior named “counselling”. Many often misinterpret that the term counselling with psychiatrist counselling and developed trepidation against career counselling, which is actually a boon and a path finder for us.

Therefore, I feel that its my prime responsibility to first give you a clear picture of what is career counselling? Before I role down to its reasons.

To begin with, I would like to state a famous saying Confucius said: “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” This saying is quite luminous to answer the above question. But still to simplify- career counselling is to help students choose a field that is in tune with their skills and their job expectations. Thus, with the help of career counselling, most candidates end up choosing the right career, and perform their level best, which ultimately helps them succeed.

Once you sink in with the idea of what is it all about. It’s high time to make you realize why do you as a aspirant need counselling.

  • Career Counselling helps in determining a student’s true potential. Students are often confused about their career preferences. Aptitude tests and counselling sessions would help identify their field of specialization. This would indeed help a student in following the right course of study for accomplishing his career goal.
  • Secondly, despite having a clear idea of their choice of career, students do not have the requisite knowledge to plan their higher course of specialized study in order to fulfill the eligibility for their chosen field. In such a scenario, career counselling can help clear these doubts by giving them clarity and vision regarding what they can expect from various educational courses.   • Career guidance and counselling can reach groups such as disadvantaged people, young people disengaged from education as well as the unemployed. It can also prevent youngsters from leaving school early and becoming ‘Neets’ (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
